Electrical testing is not a legal requirement; however, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 requires that any electrical appliances that have the possibility to cause any damage or injury must be maintained to ensure that they are safe to be used. But these regulations do not say what must be done, who should do it and how often. So, the PAT test is the test that must be conducted in order to conform to these regulations. If these regulations are not conformed to, employers and landlords can be fined large amount of money and can also face imprisonment up to 2 years. So, electrical testing regulations can be easily conformed to by having a PAT test carried out in your working environment and homes, which includes a series of tests being conducted on several electrical appliances and seeing if they pass or fail the health and safety checks. It is the employers and landlords responsibility to identify the types of equipment that are regularly used and/or moved around a lot.
