PAT testing in itself is not compulsory and does not have to be carried out.
However, the law states that all electrical equipment must be safe and maintained regularly. So, in order to conform to the law, it is recommended that you have a PAT test. PAT testing includes electrical appliances going through a series of thorough tests like: a visual inspection, earth continuity, lead polarity and insulation resistance checks.
PAT testing legislation was put in effect so that you conform to:
– Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974
– Electricity at Work Regulations of 1989
– Provision and Use of Work Equipment regulations of 1998
– the Management of Health and Safety at Work regulations of 1999
Not having a pat test carried out to ensure the safety of your electrical appliances can lead to fines of up to £20,000 or imprisonment of up to 2 years.
