Portable Appliance Testing which is also known as PAT testing, is the thorough inspection of electrical appliances to ensure that they are safe to use. A full PAT test involves a visual inspection first to identify any risks, followed by an earth continuity test, lead polarity and insulation resistance checks. Once each appliance is PAT tested, they are individually marked as passed or failed, and given a certificate with all the results showing. Even though it is not a legal obligation, it is still your responsibility as an employer or landlord to ensure the safety of your employees or tenants. By doing a PAT test, you are obliging to the requirements that the government have issued. If you do not do this, this can result in fines up to £20,000 and also might lead to up to 2 years imprisonment and unlimited financial penalties.
