What does the PAT test involve
The PAT testing involves firstly a visual inspection, which a PAT tester looks for any visible damages before carrying out a series of tests to check for internal damages. These tests include an earth continuity test, lead polarity and insulation resistance checks. After each appliance is PAT tested, a sticker is issued which indicates whether the appliance has passed or failed which is seen using a green and red sticker. Once the test is completed, you will be given a certificate which will have all the results on it.
Who carries out the PAT test?
The PAT test should be carried out by someone that has the required electrical training and knowledge. This is because the PAT tester knows what equipment to use to carry out the tests, knows how to use the equipment properly and is able to interpret the results to you. Here at the PAT testing association we will be able to have someone trained to carry out your PAT testing in your working environment or home.
Is it compulsory to have a PAT test?
The law states that electrical appliances are maintained to prevent any danger from happening, but it does not state how this must be achieved. This is why PAT testing is done in order to legally conform to the regulations. Failure to do so can lead to consequences which include hefty fines ranging from £2,000 to £20,000 imprisonment which can be for up to 2 years.
