PAT testing is the thorough inspection of electrical appliances to ensure that they are safe to use. The tests include earth continuity, lead polarity and insulation resistance checks. This is carried out using special PAT testing equipment and is done by a PAT tester. It is important that the PAT testing is carried out by a PAT tester as this is someone that knows what equipment to use, how to use it and interpret the final results.
Once each appliance is PAT tested, it is marked with a sticker which indicates if it has passed or failed the tests. Once this is done, you are given a certificate which shows all the results off.
Not all types of electrical appliances need to be PAT tested. The most dangerous and that require full PAT testing are Class 1 electrical appliances. Examples of these appliances are:
– Floor standing printers
– Desktop computers
– Industrial machinery
– Fridges
– Freezers
– Washing machines
– Photocopiers
– Kettles
– Irons
– Microwaves
– Etc.
It is important you have PAT testing carried out as it is a legal obligation to maintain the safety of your working environment, and PAT testing is the best way to achieve this.
