PAT testing stands for portable appliance testing which is a series of tests carried out on electrical appliances to ensure that they are safe to use. These tests include a visual inspection, earth continuity, lead polarity and insulation resistance checks.
PAT testing is carried out on different electrical appliances which are categorised into different Classes.
Class 1 electrical appliances are the most dangerous and require a full PAT test. Examples of Class 1 appliances are: floor standing printers, fridges, freezers, industrial machinery, desktop computers, etc.
Class 2 electrical appliances have extra insulation, so they only require a PAT insulation test. Examples of Class 2 appliances are: desktop printers, food mixers, lamps, televisions, DVD players, hairdryers.
Class 3 electrical appliances do not require a PAT test; however, their charging leads may need to be PAT tested. Examples of Class 3 appliances are laptops, mobile phone chargers and cameras.
It is important to have PAT testing done on your electrical equipment as you do not want to put yourself of those at your place of work in danger. It is also required by the law that you have your electrical appliances maintained, and PAT testing is the best way to ensure this happens.
