What is a PAT test?
A PAT test stands for Portable Appliance Testing and is the testing of your electrical appliances ensuring that they are safe to use. It is important to have PAT testing done as this will help prevent any electrical related accidents from happening.
What does the PAT test consist of?
The first step of a PAT test is to visually inspect the appliance. This is just to make sure there are no damages on the wiring.
Then a PAT testing machine is used which picks up several readings from each electrical appliance. These readings are the earth continuity, lead polarity and insulation resistance checks.
Once each appliance is tested, a sticker is placed on the item which says if it has passed or failed. This is visibly shown by either a green sticker if the electrical appliance has passed the test or a red sticker if it has failed.
You are then given a certificate at the end of the PAT test with all the results on it.
What if an appliance has failed?
If an appliance fails the PAT test, then the PAT tester will advise you to remove the appliance and replace it as soon as possible. We also advise you to not use the item any longer.
What items should be PAT tested?
Electrical appliances are categorised into different classes. Class 1 appliances need a full PAT test, Class 2 appliances need an insulation test and Class 3 appliances don’t need to be PAT tested at all.

How often should items be PAT tested?
The PAT test certificate expires after a year.
Can anyone do a PAT test?
The answer is no, it is advised that you have someone that has the required training to carry out the PAT testing. This is because they:

– Know how to use the PAT testing equipment
– Know how to interpret the results for you at the end of the test
