Pat Testing Association

Electrical appliances need PAT testing to ensure that they are safe to use. There are some electrical appliances that are more dangerous and need a PAT test than others.

Electrical appliances are categorised into different classes, which are a helpful indicator of which items need PAT testing.

Class 1 electrical appliances are the most dangerous and require a full PAT test. Examples of Class 1 appliances are:

          Floor standing printers

          Fridges

          Freezers

          Industrial machinery

          Washing machines

          Desktop computers

          Microwaves

          Toasters

          Kettles

          Laptop cables

          Mobile phone chargers

          Etc.

Class 2 electrical appliances have extra insulation, so they are safer and only require a PAT insulation test. Examples of Class 2 electrical appliances are:

          Desktop printers

          Televisions

          Drills

          Lamps

          Food mixers

          Etc.

Class 3 electrical appliances are the safest, and might only need their charging leads to be PAT tested. Examples of Class 3 electrical appliances are:

          Laptops

          Cameras

          Mobile phone chargers
