A portable appliance is any appliance that can be plugged into an electrical socket and can also move, this is a reasonable definition as there is no firm definition placed of what a portable appliance is.
These appliances are categorised into different classes, Class 1 portable appliances are the most dangerous and require a full PAT test, Class 2 portable appliances only require an insulation test and Class 3 appliances do not need a PAT test at all.
